How To Conceive Twins

How To Conceive Twins- What causes twins?

Obviously we all know the conventional way of how babies (including twins) are created, unless you didn’t pay attention in biology class that is, but what we’re talking about is what’s happening on the inside, on a cellular and more genetic level. There are numerous factors that can help to create twins, with the three most common examples being:

Age – Studies have found that older women are up to 4 times more likely to conceive twins than younger women. The reason for this is that as they grow older, their bodies will be far more likely to release at least two, sometimes more, eggs during each ovulation cycle.

Genetics – If twins already run in your family, this means you will be genetically more likely to conceive twins that a woman who has no history of twins in her family.

Pregnancy related illness or loss – If you have been unfortunate enough to have suffered the agony and heart break of stillbirth or miscarriage, studies have revealed that you will be more likely to conceive twins the next time you fall pregnant. As yet there is no clear evidence for why that is.

How To Conceive Twins – Different types of twins

Twins are of course siblings that have shared the same womb and have been born on the same day, roughly around the same time, although this isn’t always the case. As touched upon previously, when people think of twins, they almost always think of identical twins to begin with, but there are actually numerous different variations, here’s a look at some examples:

Fraternal twins – Fraternal twins are the most common type of twins and can be best remembered for being described as “non-identical twins”. Fraternal twins are formed when two eggs become fertilized by two separate sperms. These two separate eggs then form two separate zygotes, meaning the technical term for fraternal twins is actually dizygotic twins. It is only down to the female to influence whether or not dizygotic twins are formed as it all comes down to the number of eggs released.

Identical twins – Identical twins are formed when one sperm fertilizes one egg, which then forms one zygote. This is known as Monozygotic. Over time however, the zygote separates into two separate embryos. These two embryos then change into foetuses with both of them sharing the same womb. As the name implies, identical twins look extremely similar to one another, almost identical, hence the name.

Mirror twins – Mirror twins are actually a special subset of identical twins, meaning they look almost identical, except they have completely opposite features to one another. So, if one twin is left handed, the other will be right handed. Around 25% of all identical twins turn out to be mirror twins

Half identical twins – Half identical twins aren’t medically or scientifically acknowledged as an official type of twins but it is only expected to be a matter of time. half identical twins are described as being not quite fraternal, and not quite identical either.

Fun facts about twins

Now that we know a little more about how the conception of twins can be influenced, as well as some of the different types of twins, we’ll now take a look at a few fun facts about twins, that many of you will have probably never heard of.

Twins can actually have different biological dads – The chances of this happening are around one in one billion, but back in 2009, a woman known as Mia Washington released two eggs in the same month, slept with two different sexual partners, with both of these men fertilizing the two eggs, which resulted in two children with two different fathers. There are only 3 reported cases of this very rare occurrence as it stands.

Twins can be different races – If the parents happen to be of mixed race descent, their sperm and/or eggs will contain different genetic codes for black or white skin. This in turn could lead to one child being black, and the other being white. The chances of this occurring are around one in one million.

Women who give birth to twins could live longer – Studies have found that women who give birth to twins could live longer. It is thought that this is an evolutionary trait of strong and healthy women where the strongest and healthiest would take advantage of the opportunity to pass on twice their genes at once.

Twins can lead freakily similar lives – In cases of twins being separated at birth and being adopted for example, numerous cases have found that twins can often lead freakily similar lives. For example: There have been cases where twins have been separated at birth, have both had a pet with the same name, both ate and drank the same foods and drinks, both drove the same vehicles, and have both married the same number of times, to women with exactly the same first names.

How to increase the chances of having twins

By now you’re probably well aware that genetics does indeed play a key role in determining whether or not a couple can conceive twins but there are also several other outside influences that can be put into practice to increase the chances of having twins. These include:

Wait until later in life before trying to conceive – Numerous studies have found that older women are far more likely to conceive twins than younger women, so if you do have your heart set on twins, you may be wise to wait until later in life. Generally speaking, between 35 and 45 is the window slot in which women have been found to fall pregnant with twins, but you must also remember that the older you get, the less likely you will be to conceive.

Stop taking the pill immediately before – When some couples try to conceive, they generally stop using the pill several months, sometimes years, in advance before they start seriously. Instead, try stopping immediately before. There is evidence to suggest that stopping using the pill around 4 – 6 weeks before trying to seriously conceive could help because as the body is trying so hard to regulate its hormones, more than one egg is often released during each ovulation cycle.

Speak to a doctor – Thanks to all of the huge advances in modern technology and medicine, there are now trained medical professionals that can help you to conceive twins. IVF treatment is of course an option, but it is unfortunately expensive. Implanting numerous eggs at once is cost effective as you could be increasing your chances of conceiving.

Clomid – Clomid is a drug taken orally that is designed to be used by women that do not ovulate. When taken by women who are able to ovulate however, the chances of conceiving twins increases by around 33%. The drug works by basically helping to encourage the ovaries to produce more eggs per ovulation cycle.

Tips on how to conceive twins naturally

Although there are numerous medical procedures, drugs, and treatments available to help increase your chances of having twins, many of these treatments and procedures are expensive and do pose risks to general health and well-being, and can also take an extremely long time. If you have any concerns but would still like to increase your chances of having twins, we’ll now take a look at a few ways on how to conceive twins naturally:

Again, wait until later in life – By now you know that older women are more likely to conceive twins so it may be wise waiting until later in life, or at least continuing trying to conceive until later in life.

Folic acid supplements – Folic acid has been found to play a significant role in the conception of twins. Folic acid helps to prevent birth defects and there is evidence to suggest that you could increase your chances of conceiving twins by up to 40% if you use folic acid supplements whilst trying to conceive.

Don’t be afraid of a little weight gain – Although being overweight is bad for our health, studies have revealed that women who happen to be slightly overweight (around 10 – 20lbs above their ideal BMI) actually have an increased chance of having twins. Taller women also could be more likely to have twins, although you can’t really alter your height.

Eat nutrient rich foods – Eating foods rich in nutrients is another great way of increasing your chances of having twins as the healthier you are, the more efficient your body will be. Eat plenty of healthy foods rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and healthy fats such as omega 3’s.

Live a healthier life – If you drink alcohol excessively, smoke cigarettes, or make other poor lifestyle choices then you need to stop doing these things in order to maximise your chances of having twins, and to just simply live a healthier and happier life too for that matter.

Consume dairy produce – Studies have found that women who consume dairy produce at least 5 times per day, are more likely to conceive twins. IGF (Insulin-like Growth Factor) a hormone produced naturally within the livers of cows is thought to be the reason for this.
